Advancing the One Health approach: 20 years of promoting responsible use of medicines in animals

The health of animals and humans is inherently connected, with profound implications for society and the planet. Protecting animal health goes further than simply ensuring animal welfare —it is fundamental to food safety, security, and sustainability, as well as for public health.

Responsible use of medicines supports good farm management, positively impacting both the sustainability of food production and animal husbandry.

In recent years, the European Commission has enacted landmark legislation, including the Animal Health Law and the Regulation on Veterinary Medicinal Products. These initiatives have supported the use of diagnostic tools, vaccines, biosecurity means, and treatments while intensifying the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

What should be the EU’s next steps under this new mandate to further advance a preventive approach in both animal and human health? How can adopting a comprehensive One Health approach drive meaningful progress?
