The European Union stands at a pivotal moment in addressing the burden of cardiometabolic conditions, with obesity on the verge of becoming an epidemic, as also recognised in the SANT Committee’s exchange of views in October. Over the last mandate, the Parliament zoned in on these conditions and their interconnectedness, delivering a Resolution on Diabetes and an Own-initiative Report on Non-Communicable diseases.
Today we have the science and treatments for these conditions, how will the incoming European Parliament and Commission confront this pressing public health challenge and support further EU action? How can EU stakeholders work together to drive bold leadership and political will for change to tackle cardiometabolic health?
The EU has the opportunity to promote better prevention and early diagnosis, effective management and integrated treatment pathways to enhance metabolic health across the bloc. Only an ambitious EU plan with specific targets can improve health outcomes for people living with these conditions.
