The push for a fully integrated European power system represents a major opportunity to accelerate decarbonisation, energy independence and ensure a resilient, cost-effective supply of energy for all.
On 19 June 2025, the European Parliament adopted its resolution “Electricity Grids: The Backbone of the EU Energy System”, calling for a coordinated, pan-European approach to electricity system planning. This builds on the May 2024 Council conclusions, with EU Energy Ministers unanimously calling for ‘holistic, long-term, coordinated’ electricity grid infrastructure planning and EU leaders’ call for a genuine Energy Union, requiring ambitious electrification and investments in electricity grids, storage and interconnections.
In light of the Commission’s European Grids Package and President von der Leyen’s bold vision to drive European competitiveness, the event will discuss how the three institutional visions can be enabled by a pan-European electricity supergrid.
Across studies and jurisdictions, the conclusion is clear: The system benefits of electricity grid integration far outweigh the investment several times over- for every €1.3 billion invested in grids, generation costs are reduced by €4 billion annually in Europe.
Over €1 trillion must be invested in Europe’s electricity grids over the coming 15 years.
The event will focus on how to connect and sequence these investments, the reforms needed in EU governance and planning, and the role of innovative technologies in developing a supergrid capable of delivering affordable, secure and sustainable energy for Europe.
This event is by invitation only
