The cost of silence: Why Europe can no longer afford under-treatment of menopause

Menopause is not just a health issue; it is a growing economic and societal challenge. Inadequate diagnosis, treatment, and workplace support drive long-term health complications such as osteoporosis, heart problems and poor mental health, while causing productivity losses and workforce drop-out at the peak of women’s careers. Yet evidence-based menopause care remains fragmented across the EU.

Building on the recent Strasbourg dinner discussion, this policymakers’ dinner will explore the economic and societal burden of under-treatment and demonstrate how early, appropriate care has strong preventive value by reducing future ageing-related complications and follow-up healthcare costs, positioning menopause care as a cost-effective investment in sustainable health systems, workforce participation, and gender equality.
