Air passenger rights at a crossroads: Striking the right balance

Air passenger rights have long underpinned Europe’s transport system, but today’s framework is struggling to keep pace with reality. Delays, cancellations and accessibility gaps affect millions of travellers each year, while passengers with reduced mobility continue to face unnecessary barriers. At the same time, digitalisation and shifting travel patterns demand protections that are clearer, more consistent and future-proof.

The European Union is now moving to revise its passenger rights rules, with reforms designed to strengthen protections, improve accessibility and ensure fair treatment across the transport sector.  While strengthening accessibility for passengers remains essential, it is equally important that reforms support a regulatory environment that is fair, proportionate, and enables airlines to continue delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable air travel.

This networking reception will bring together policymakers, industry and passenger representatives to examine the proposals, their likely impact, and the path toward a more coherent and effective passenger rights regime in Europe.
