Powering Europe’s competitiveness: Renewable fuels for a secure and affordable transition

As Europe heads to a net-zero economy, renewable liquid gases (rLGs) such as bioLPG and renewable DME are gaining attention as practical, immediately deployable solutions for decarbonising transport, heating, and industrial sectors, particularly in rural and off-grid areas where energy choices are limited and electrification alone is not feasible or affordable. With supportive policy frameworks, targeted funding, and national mandates, there is growing momentum to scale domestic production and create clear market signals that drive investment in renewable liquid gases as part of a diverse, technology-neutral energy mix.

This high-level discussion will examine how renewable liquid gases can support Europe’s decarbonisation across key sectors, starting with the need to scale up their production within the EU. It will focus on their role in delivering a fair and affordable transition for heating and cooling in households, industry, and commercial buildings — particularly in rural and off-grid areas — in the context of the EU Heating and Cooling Strategy.

The discussion will also look at how technology-neutral approaches and targeted demand-creation measures can enable renewable liquid gases to contribute to clean mobility. In this context, it will consider the EU Automotive Package and the Commission’s proposed revision of CO₂ emission standards for cars and vans, and what these initiatives mean for a just, inclusive, and affordable decarbonisation of road transport in Europe.

Together, these elements aim to ensure that no industry or community is left behind in Europe’s energy transformation.
