As the EU reviews CO₂ emission standards for cars and vans, policymakers face a key question: how to ensure that the framework delivers real decarbonisation while remaining genuinely technology neutral. ePURE’s position is that the current approach risks excluding proven and already available solutions, notably sustainable crop-based renewable ethanol, despite its recognition under the Renewable Energy Directive and its certified lifecycle greenhouse gas savings.
The discussion will focus on how Article 5a can be improved to include all RED-compliant renewable fuels, remove arbitrary limits such as the 3% cap, and better reflect lifecycle emissions reductions alongside electrification.
This policymakers’ dinner will bring together key EU policymakers, industry representatives and relevant stakeholders to exchange views on how to ensure a sustainable, inclusive and consumer-centric transition for road transport in Europe.
