A vision for a Clean Industry Deal: how the mining industry can deliver on a climate-neutral economy

The twin digital and sustainability transition starts in the mine. Raw materials are vital to Europe’s economy, underpinning its industrial base and the production of everyday goods and high-tech. Their sustainability performance is of increasing importance for the EU and globally, even more than ensuring reliable access. From ensuring job security, to optimising supply chains and achieving strategic autonomy in a hot geopolitical world, sustainably mined, climate neutral raw materials are much more than a procurement issue – they are strategic in nature.

Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to:

As fossil fuels get replaced with minerals, new dependencies arise: How can Europe stimulate more investments into its own mineral wealth?

European mining and the rest of the world compete on an unequal footing, as climate friendly production is costly, and not generating a premium. How can Europe’s new Industrial Green Deal support climate-friendly and sustainable mining in Europe?

What are the investments and structural changes needed to turn mining climate neutral?
